Many people were waiting for the release of the upcoming game Hogwarts Legacy based on the book series Harry Potter. The long antcipated game has been subject to alot of criticism since the game was first announced in September 2020, mostly due to J.K Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, and her outspoken views on the transgender community. A huge community of gamers which includes former Harry Potter fans have been very outspoken in not purchasing the new Harry Potter game and on Friday over 300 LGBTQ gamers and allies launched a week-long protest against the game of the streaming platform Twitch and have discourged people from streaming it.

Valerie, a queer gamer who was the one who organized the protest on Twitch stated, "Being an ally is something that you do; it's not who you are. That's how you spend your money, that's how you spend your time. If your support comes with restrictions or exceptions, like buying and playing a game like this, you're not being an ally." However before Valerie's protest stream had even began, the online boycott had already raised over $20,000 for the Trans Justice Funding Project. However, the video game which J.K Rowling had no direct involvement with includes features that are intende to make transgender players feel welcomed in the Wizarding World. Although one of the characters is not stated to be trans, in her dialogue with the players players are able to realize that she is a trans. Furthermore, players are also able to build their characters without having to choose a gender and they are able to just pick a body type and voice tone without choosing a specific gender. Afterwards, they are then able to pick whether they would like to be a witch or a wizard.
