Women's March Taiwan 2018

"Women's Rights are Human Rights" is the slogan of the Women's March Taiwan 2018 held by the feminism organization Women's March Taiwan. On March 8th, 2018, Women's March Taiwan held a parade in Taipei city to stand for women's rights. The description of the activity's Facebook page defines this parade's main idea as erasing invisible discrimination. Taiwan is always regarded as a gender-equal place. However, the traditional social norms in Taiwan originated from feudal China, still assigning women many social roles with unequal requirements. For example, women need to take more responsibility in caring for their children and family to get the appraisal from society. In the workplace, women in Taiwan are experiencing language discrimination from the peers unconsciously. Through this parade, Women's March Taiwan brought these invisible discriminations up to the public and asked for attention.

The parade started from Freedom Square and ended in the International Village. The participated people wore purple in response to the specified color by the International women's organization. They brought their self-made boards or flags written with invisible discriminations. Besides women, many men joined this parade and spoke out for women. In an interview, a man participant said, "I'm joining the parade here not only for women justice but also for human justice. People should get the awareness of all injustice thing happening around to make an equal society."

This activity indicated a high status of women's justice awareness in Taiwan. However, compared to other frequent political activities such as against one party, women's social activities are still seldom happening in Taiwan. Also, gender justice cannot get a significant change after a single parade like the Women's March Taiwan 2018. From my research, there are only a few women's organizations in Taiwan. The public also lacks knowledge of these organizations. To achieve a more visible result, women's organizations in Taiwan should do more public activities and make these activities visible with gender justice.
