Political Pieing: Anita Bryant 2 Favorite 

Gay rights activist, Thom Higgins, pied Anita Bryant, singer, former Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner, Florida Orange Juice Representative, and anti-gay rights activist, at a press conference in Des Moines IA. Bryant was a relentless crusader against gay rights. She led the Save Our Children coalition, which contributed to the repeal of the anti-discrimination ordinance and is known for ridiculous statements, such as, "As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children" and "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters", and, "All America and all the world will hear what the people have said, and with God's continued help we will prevail in our fight to repeal similar laws throughout the nation."

Political pieing uses clowning to ridicule the opponent. Bryant was one of the first to be publicly, politically pied. She commented, "Well, at least it's a fruit pie", making a pun on the derogatory term for a gay man. She prayed that God forgive Higgins and cried, all on television. Her husband, who promised not the retaliate, later pied Higgins and the other protesters. This event only added to this issues national attention and strengthened the resistance to Bryant's campaign.
