China's underground hiphop became an art movement since early 2000s. With characteristics of self-expression, localization and social criticism, Chinese hip hop music quickly gained popularity among students and working-class Chinese. Some notable music groups from Beijing include Yin Ts'ang (隐藏) and In3er (阴三儿). In 2008, In3er, a group of 3 local Beijingers released a song titled "Beijing Evening News", which criticized many social issues taking place in Beijing City while doubting the truthfulness of official news. In the difficult art environment in today's China that is developing economically at a rocket speed, underground hiphop might shed light on a new way to bring about social change because of easy distribution enabled by technology and social media.
